Umbilical Cord Tangling At Birth: Simple Oversight Or medical Malpractice?

When your baby is delivered, the last thing you expect is for the umbilical cord to be wrapped around his or her neck. This incident is surprisingly common and it can lead to a dangerous condition called anoxia when not treated properly. Anoxia is when a baby is deprived of oxygen at birth-without those first breaths, brain damage is a possibility.

There are so many aspects of a birth that makes the process more complicated than it seems. While many people perceive a vaginal delivery as simply a case of the baby coming out, doctors have much more to worry about, including the possibility of the umbilical cord tangling in the womb. Due the complexities of the human body, many health professionals would like you to believe that such incidents cannot be detected.

Unfortunately, many cases of umbilical cord tangling may be detected before birth but doctors fail to follow such procedures. As the baby's head drops towards the cervix, a pelvic exam can give a doctor an idea of the location of the cord. In some cases, it is obvious that the umbilical cord is tangled around the baby, but in other cases it is not. Late-term ultrasounds can also reveal that something isn't right with the cord.

In other situations, the cord does not present a problem until birth. These moments are crucial in preventing anoxia, and your doctor's main priority should be in getting the umbilical cord off of the baby immediately.

Giving birth is an extremely fragile process, and the goal is to deliver a healthy baby. If you encounter problems with the umbilical cord at your baby's birth, it is important to discuss the matter with an experienced NY Medical Malpractice attorney to make sure that your family isn't the victim of medical malpractice.
