Fatal SUV accident in New York

A black BMW SUV that was seen July 17 running a stop sign at a speed higher than 50 miles per hour. The vehicle was involved in a fatal crash with a Toyota in Queens County that afternoon. The collision claimed the life of a 40-year-old woman and left her 9-year-old daughter badly injured. The accident took place at the intersection of 130th Street and 115th Avenue in South Ozone Park.

The driver of the Toyota sedan told reporters that he tried desperately to avoid the oncoming SUV. Even so, his vehicle was struck with enough force to eject both his wife and daughter through the rear window.

Emergency medical services personnel found the woman who had been ejected from the sedan pinned beneath the vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The 9-year-old girl was transported to an area hospital with critical injuries. She was immediately taken into surgery.

New York residents who suffer injury, loss or damage in motor vehicle accidents caused by reckless behavior may pursue civil remedies by filing lawsuits against the negligent individuals responsible, but this is not an option in a hit-and-run situation. Personal injury attorneys who focus their practice on motor vehicle accidents might be able to explain to hit-and-run accident victims that they may have the option of filing a claim for compensation with their own auto insurance providers. Attorneys might also assist clients who have no insurance coverage by helping them to file a claim with the New York State Motor Vehicle Accident Indemnification Corporation.
