NHTSA fatalities report reveals alarming year-on-year rise

Many of the new cars and trucks sold in New York are equipped with innovative safety systems that can actually help to prevent accidents by automatically braking or steering around obstacles in the roadway. Unfortunately, new safety technologies were not enough to prevent traffic accident deaths from surging by 7.2 percent in 2015. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has not recorded such a year-over-year increase in fatalities since 1966.

According to the NHTSA, a noticeable increase in the number of passenger vehicles using the nation's roadways led to the steep rise in fatalities. The safety agency revealed in an Aug. 29 report that 35,092 road users lost their lives in accidents in 2015. The report asks legislators, law enforcement agencies, researchers and safety experts to work together to tackle the problem. Analysts put the rise in traffic levels down to low oil prices and more abundant employment opportunities.

The NHTSA report also revealed that many deadly accidents involve reckless or negligent behavior. Speeding or impairment are contributory factors in almost a third of fatal accidents, and almost half of those killed on the nation's roads in 2015 were not properly restrained. Accidents involving distracted drivers constituted about one in 10 fatal crashes in 2015.

Pursuing civil remedies following a serious automobile accident can be a challenging and frustrating process for those struggling to cope with debilitating injuries. Attorneys with experience of personal injury cases may help accident victims by advocating on their behalf during settlement negotiations. Attorneys could also file lawsuits against negligent motorists or their insurance providers when settlement discussions fail to lead to an amicable agreement.
