Top 10 worst drivers by state

New York motorists are not among the best or the worst drivers in the country, according to a study by an insurance comparison website. Using data from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, the website ranked New York drivers about average when it comes to safe driving. On the other hand, drivers from Texas and Louisiana tied for the No. 1 spot on the list of the worst drivers by state.

To rate the best and the worst drivers, researchers looked at 2015 accident data and analyzed several contributing factors in the crashes. Texas drivers ranked high in all five of the categories that were analyzed which included speeding, careless driving, drunk driving, failure to obey traffic signals, failure to use seat belts and fatalities per 100 million miles traveled. After Texas and Louisiana, the states with the worst drivers were South Carolina, North Dakota, Delaware, New Mexico, Nevada, Alabama, Arizona and Montana.

A spokesperson for the website said that Texas' and Louisiana's places among the worst drivers in the country is nothing new, as those states have ranked near the top of its annual list for quite some time. In Texas, transportation officials admit that there has been at least one traffic fatality every day for the past 16 years.

Around the holidays, the roads can become more dangerous as many people drive long distances to visit family and often have had too much to drink. People who are injured in a motor vehicle accident caused by an impaired or drowsy driver may want to have a lawyer's help in seeking compensation for their out-of-pocket medical expenses and other amounts.
