Study shows patients with female doctors have better outcomes

New York residents who are hospitalized may be interested to learn that they are more likely to survive if their primary doctor is a woman. According to a report published on Dec. 19 in an American Medical Association journal, patients who were treated by a female physician had a slightly lower relative risk of dying prematurely. They also had a lower risk of being readmitted to a hospital after being discharged.

For the study, repeat hospitalizations were analyzed because they could indicate poorer care. Additionally, data from hospitals that had doctors who take patients as they are admitted were used.

Previous studies showed that female doctors were more likely to spend time with their patients. This including talking to them about their emotional and social well-being in addition t their health. Further, female doctors were also likely to follow the guidelines more closely than male doctors. The study found that, when put into practice, the outcomes for patients were positively affected. It should be noted that the study does not prove that female doctors are better than male doctors. It simply indicates that there are certain habits that could improve doctor and patient relationships and outcomes.

There are many doctors who do everything they can to provide proper care for their patients. However, if a doctor fails to diagnose a disease that a patient has and a worsened medical condition is the result, this could constitute medical malpractice. An attorney representing the patient would need to demonstrate that such failure constituted a breach of the duty of care that the practitioner owed to the client, and the opinions of medical experts could be used to support this.
