The Snapchat speed filter and vehicle accidents

Drivers in New York should be aware of the dangers of using the Snapchat speed filter while behind the wheel. According to safety advocates, the app is distracting and also encourages dangerous driving behaviors.

One real-life example of how the use of the Snapchat speed filter can be dangerous while driving involves a 10-second video in which a driver accelerated to 82.6 miles per hour and then to 115.6 miles per hour. Nine minutes after the video was posted to Snapchat, the 22-year-old driver and his 19-year old passenger crossed a highway median in Florida, colliding almost head-on into another vehicle. The driver and his passenger were killed as well as three people in the other vehicle. In addition, three more people in the other vehicle were injured.

In another vehicle accident that some have connected to the use of the Snapchat speed filter, an 18-year-old woman in Georgia was allegedly using the app while accelerating up to 113 miles an hour before crashing to another vehicle. The driver of the other vehicle sustained traumatic brain injuries. According to usage logs from Snapchat, there was no record of the 18-year-old driver using the app during or near the time the collision took place. A legal motion has been filed to dismiss a lawsuit brought on by the victim. Snapchat has released a statement asserting that it actively discourages the use of its speed filter while driving. There is a cautionary message that is displayed the first time the app is used and when a user accelerates over 15 miles per hour.

Even when they are not speeding, drivers who are using cellphone apps while behind the wheel can become distracted and subsequently cause motor vehicle collisions. People who have been injured in such an accident may want to meet with an attorney to see if filing a lawsuit against the negligent motorist would be an advisable way of seeking compensation for the losses that they have sustained.
