Passengers injured in New York City LIRR train wreck

During the morning rush hour of Jan. 4, dozens of passengers were injured when a Long Island Rail Road train derailed in Brooklyn as it approached Atlantic Terminal. Around 100 of the 450 people who were traveling on the train received medical treatment for minor injuries, and one victim suffered a broken leg. The train was coming from the Far Rockaway area of Queens.Authorities say the train accident occurred shortly after 8:30 a.m. when it struck a bumping block as it approached the terminal. The impact caused the slow-moving train to jump the tracks and strike a small station office facility. A rail punctured the train's floor and the front car was badly damaged in the accident.

The passengers riding on the train were injured when they were hurled to the floor or thrown into each other on impact. One passenger said smoke filled the train and there was chaos among the passengers. First responders carried some of the passengers on stretchers and gave medical assistance to others at the scene.

The Atlantic Terminal is located in downtown Brooklyn below a shopping mall and next to the Barclays Center where sports events and large concerts take place. When the report was released, investigators dispatched by the National Transportation Safety Board were looking into the cause of the accident.

Mass transit accidents have the potential to cause far more damage than this one did, such as when an Amtrak train derailed near Philadelphia in 2015, resulting in eight fatalities. An attorney representing an injured victim or the surviving family members of a person who was killed can use the official investigation report as part of the evidence in order to pinpoint the party or parties that should bear financial responsibility.
