Risk of crashes increase when drivers are not healthy

Truck drivers in New York and throughout the country tend to have poor eating and sleeping habits. They may also have health issues because they sit for long periods of time. According to a study from University of Utah School of Medicine, the risk of getting into an accident increases fourfold for those who have at least three health issues. Overall, the crash rate is 29 per 100 million miles traveled.

However, for drivers who had three or more health conditions, their accident rate was 93 per 100 million miles traveled. Heart disease, diabetes and low back pain were among the conditions flagged in the study. The medical records of approximately 50,000 commercial truck drivers were analyzed to reach this conclusion. Of those examined, 34 percent had at least one of the flagged conditions.

Controls were put into place to account for how a driver's age or amount of experience as a commercial driver may have impacted his or her chances of getting into an accident. According to the lead author of the study, the results demonstrated a link between diminished health and an increased accident risk. The results of the study were published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

Those who are hurt in truck accidents may face significant back, neck or other injuries. An attorney may be able to help them pursue a personal injury lawsuit against the driver who caused the crash. If a truck driver was negligent in causing the crash, an injured victim may be compensated for lost wages, lost future earnings and medical bills. An attorney may be able to help prove negligence in an effort to get an injured victim the compensation he or she may deserve under state law.
