Driving while distracted

New York residents may be aware that April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month. According to AT&T, there are numerous statistics that put into focus just how often drivers operate a motor vehicle while distracted. For instance, 70 percent of those who responded to a poll as part of the AT&T campaign said that they use their smartphones while driving.

Of those who do, four out of 10 use it for social media while another three out of 10 browse the internet. Others said that they use their phones to engage in video chats. Addiction to social media and a belief that video chats can be done safely are reasons people gave for engaging in such behaviors while driving. Each year, as many as 600,000 people are injured because of distracted drivers.

In comparison, only 290,000 people are injured because of drunk drivers. Parents of teen drivers are urged to set a good example of what a safe driver looks like. One way to encourage teens to engage in safe driving behavior is to have them sign a family driving agreement. It may also be a good idea for parents to talk to their kids about driving laws in their state.

Individuals who are injured in motor vehicle accidents may have to face lengthy periods of recovery. If negligence on the part of another driver caused the crash, injured victims may be entitled to compensation for their losses. An attorney can use witness statements and other evidence such as the official investigation report in order to determine the party that should be held financially responsible.
