Survey looks at passenger vehicle safety

New York pickup truck drivers might be safer in an accident than drivers of passenger cars. The same may be true for drivers of SUVs and minivans. A study released May 25 by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety looked at the driver fatality rate for vehicles per one million registrations and found the overall rate was 30. For passenger cars, it was 39, and for minivans it was 19. There were 21 deaths per million for SUVs and 26 for pickups.

The IIHS cautioned that their data does not tell the whole story on vehicle safety. It does not include information on passenger fatalities, nor does it include vehicles with fewer than 100,000 registered vehicle years. Some sample sizes were small, and some vehicles, such as the Chevrolet Colorado, were not included at all. According to the organization, a vehicle with both a good score and a large sample size is likely to be safer.

Traffic fatalities are on the rise. In 2015, they went up to 35,000, and it is believed that in part this is due to a stronger economy leading to more cars on the road. Automated safety features and automated vehicles are expected to make roads much safer, although it will be some time before the latter becomes commonplace.

Motor vehicle accidents that are not fatal may still be devastating. People may suffer serious injuries and might be unable to work during their recovery. Their vehicles may be totaled or need costly repairs. If another driver is at fault, an injured person might want to contact an attorney who may be able to negotiate with insurance companies. Another possibility is filing a lawsuit against the driver who caused the accident if the compensation offer from the insurance company does not cover expenses.
