Struck-by accidents more common in the construction industry

Many New Yorkers are employed in construction, an industry that carries some of the highest risks of work-related injury accidents. Among other hazards, the construction industry has the dubious distinction of being the leader among all U.S. industries for struck-by deaths.

According to the Center for Construction Research and Training, in excess of 800 workers in the construction industry died as a result of struck-by accidents from 2011 to 2015. Of those deaths, 52 percent involved workers being struck by objects or equipment, and the remainder involved workers being struck by cars or other vehicles. Workers who were ages 65 and older were at greater risk of dying from struck-by accidents.

Struck-by accidents are not the only risk that workers in the construction industry face. Many construction workers are also killed in accidents caused by electrocution, slips, falls and more. Because of the higher risks faced by construction workers, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration has focused on safety standards for the construction industry. Despite the regulations that are in place, many companies still fail to adhere to the rules, placing workers at greater risk.

When workplace injuries happen at construction sites, the victims may want to consult with workers' compensation and personal injury lawyers. The attorneys may help clients obtain benefits from the workers' compensation insurance policies of their employers. If non-employer third parties were at least partially to blame in causing the accident, the attorneys may initiate lawsuits against the negligent third parties. Lawyers may work to recover the maximum possible amounts from every potential recovery source for their clients.
