Smartphones and traffic accidents

Most drivers in New York strive to be responsible while on the road. This means obeying traffic laws and refraining from the use of drugs and alcohol which can impair sound judgment and reaction times. However, the use of smartphones may be leading to an increase in accidents and fatalities.

In fact, statistics show that traffic deaths in 2016 were up 14.4 percent from 2014, with many of the victims being pedestrians. The numbers have dismayed road safety experts as the U.S. had previously seen several years of declining fatalities. One explanation is the increased use of smartphones.

Of course, the risk of cellphone use while behind the wheel has been known for some time. The adoption of smartphones, however, has increased the risk of distracted driving. While many people do use phones for verbal communication, still more use them for texting or accessing social media networks. The fact that phones serve multiple functions that require looking at screens means that drivers are faced with more distractions than ever. People who instinctively grab their phone to check Facebook or to answer a text while at the office may well be doing the same thing while operating a vehicle. The study did indicate that it's not yet possible to prove the correlation between smartphones and accidents, but it is something worth exploring.

Individuals who have been harmed in a motor vehicle accident caused by another driver who was distracted might want to meet with a personal injury attorney to determine how to proceed. The attorney could review the motorist's cellphone usage data to see if the phone was in use at the time of the collision, which could be a sign of negligence.
