Who Is Liable For Slips And Falls At Your Summer Barbecue?

You spend plenty of money on food, drinks and games for your annual summer get together in the back yard. While you've put so much time into planning the party, spend just as much time safeguarding the premises. You will be entertaining family and friends, but if any of them gets hurt, you can be held responsible for their injuries. Here are ideas to help accident proof your yard and prevent any slips and falls that could lead to legal action.

  • Secure the deck- Make sure you repair any boards that are loose, or wood that is rotten. Make sure the steps are firm and not wobbly. Look out for nails that are sticking out. Railings must be secure and at least three feet high. If the deck is connected to your hose, make sure the connections to the ledger board are not detached. Check any patios blocks that may have become loose as well.
  • Illuminate your yard- If your parties go on into the evening, there is the potential for accidents to happen with inadequate light. All outdoor paths and should be lit with solar or LED lights that are made for the outdoors. Even shrubs and bushes can be an obstacle in the dark, so they should be marked by a light too. Tiki torches must be secured in the ground with stakes.
  • Clear the way- Never leave anything lying around doorways or walkways for people to trip over. You may be used to these things being around but your guests won't be.
  • Dry the pool area- Make sure all areas around pools are not wet to avoid slips and even drowning. Ladders to get in and out of pools should be dry as well, and always have a fence around it.

Parties are supposed to be fun, so don't let yours turn into a disaster. If you have had a bad outdoor party that resulted in injuries, contact our experienced NY premises liability attorneys and we will help you through your legal troubles.
