Robbery suspect fleeing from police crashes SUV, kills woman

A New York man fleeing police smashed his SUV into another vehicle in Queens on July 7, killing a 78-year-old woman. He was being chased by undercover cops after allegedly stealing a cell phone from a worker at an auto body shop, according to authorities.

The 50-year-old suspect, who is on parole for homicide and has 10 prior convictions, ran a red light and crashed his BMW into a Saturn near Linden Boulevard and 225th Street in Cambria Heights. Responding emergency crews pulled the Saturn's female driver from the wreckage and attempted to revive her, but she was pronounced dead onsite. The suspect was taken into custody.

Before the car chase, the suspect allegedly stopped his SUV near an auto shop in Queens Village, hopped out and tried to sell a watch to a worker standing outside. When the worker refused, the suspect reportedly grabbed the worker's phone and fled the scene. Shortly afterward, undercover officers attempted to pull the SUV over and the chase began. It is unknown what charges the suspect will face.

New York residents injured in motor vehicle accidents caused by another individual may want to discuss their case with an attorney. Using accident investigation reports and other evidence, it may be possible to build a strong personal injury lawsuit against the at-fault driver. Such a complaint could lead to a financial settlement that covers medical expenses and other financial losses. If a victim is killed in a car crash, then his or her next of kin may decide to file a wrongful death lawsuit seeking compensation for funeral and burial costs and loss of companionship.
