Judge rules in favor of Bobbi Kristina Brown's estate

New York residents who are following the case of the death of Bobbi Kristina Brown may be interested in the judge's ruling concerning her partner. Brown, the daughter of Bobby Brown and Whitney Houston, was found unresponsive in the bathtub of her Atlanta townhome and passed away six months later in hospice care at the age of 22.

While no criminal charges were filed, a civil lawsuit was filed against the TV personality's partner by the conservator of her estate the day after she was moved to hospice care. The suit alleged that Brown was physically and financially abused by her partner. After her passing, the suit came to include allegations that Brown's partner was responsible for the injuries that caused her death. Specifically, the estate claimed that the man put Brown face down in a filled tub after dosing her with a toxic cocktail, causing brain damage, although the cause of death was ruled "Undetermined" by the medical examiner. In total the suit sought damages in the amount of $50 million.

On Sept. 16, 2016, a judge ruled against Brown's partner in the case. According to reports, the man failed repeatedly to uphold court deadlines, causing Brown's estate to win the case by default. The total amount to be paid is set to be determined by the jury.

Victims of domestic violence who have sustained injuries may choose to seek restitution from the individuals responsible. A personal injury lawyer may be able to help form a case and gather evidence to attain the highest possible amount in damages. If injuries result in death, the victim's family members may choose to file a wrongful death suit on their behalf.
