AI may be diagnosing people instead of doctors

Medical errors kill far more people each year in the United States than motor vehicle accidents. Fatal drug interactions and misdiagnoses are just two of those types of errors. Some people believe that artificial intelligence may soon be making a medical diagnosis instead of a doctor. If this happens, doctors in New York and elsewhere might be primarily tasked with comforting the patient and explaining the information that has been discovered.

The quality of health care has come a long way, but tools that have been around for decades, such as blood pressure cuffs and stethoscopes, are still being used in making diagnoses. The problem now is that there is too much information. Modern technologies, such as genome sequencing, create huge amounts of medical data that no doctor can fully process. With Medicare patients having on average seven major medical conditions, communication is an issue.

A poll conducted in October 2016 found that 65 percent of the respondents would trust artificial intelligence over a medical professional when it came to making a correct diagnosis. Artificial intelligence could comprehensively review all of a patient's conditions, and a single doctor would be able to discuss the results.

In the meantime, doctors and other health care professionals will unfortunately continue to make mistakes when diagnosing a patient. This could result in a worsened medical condition if the actual disease goes untreated. Patients who have been harmed in such a manner may want to meet with an attorney who has experience in medical malpractice litigation. In order to be successful in such a lawsuit, it will have to be demonstrated that the failure to make a correct diagnosis constituted a failure to exhibit the requisite standard of care.
