Serious crash kills 1 and causes multiple injuries

A police pursuit in Freeport, New York, may have precipitated a car accident that killed one person and left two others injured. The incident began when plainclothes officers saw a 2001 Buick driven by a 45-year-old male go past them at a high rate of speed. Officers followed the car until it stopped at the intersection of Independence Avenue and North Main Street.

As an officer approached the vehicle, it took off again and hit a Mercedes so hard it was propelled into a nearby yard. A 33-year-old woman who was a passenger in the Buick died of blunt force trauma and head trauma according to authorities. The driver of the Mercedes was taken to the hospital for treatment of a broken jaw while the driver of the Buick was taken to Nassau University Medical Center. He was treated for leg and head injuries according to authorities.

The driver of the Buick was charged with manslaughter, assault and aggravated unlicensed operator. Police say that he has been taken into custody 22 times previous on charges ranging from robbery to domestic violence and selling drugs. There was no mention as to when he was to appear before a judge or if he would be given the opportunity to eventually post bail.

The surviving family members of a person who was killed in a motor vehicle accident often face financial hardships in addition to their grief over the sudden death of a loved one. In addition to paying for a burial, the contributions that the decedent made to family expenses will have to somehow be replaced. If the accident was caused by the negligence of another driver, an attorney might recommend the filing of a wrongful death lawsuit seeking compensation from that motorist for these and other losses.
