Inclement weather can lead to trouble on the road

As one of our New York readers, you know that the weather in your local area can turn at any time.

If you find yourself on the road in inclement weather, such as heavy rain or strong winds, you know that you need to adjust your approach.

There are steps you can take to improve your safety, including the following:

  • Be ready for wind gusts. This means many things, such as keeping both hands on the wheel and slowing down.
  • Make note of larger vehicles, such as trucks and buses. These vehicles find it difficult to remain in their lane of travel in high winds.
  • Take your time. One of the biggest mistakes you can make in inclement weather is being impatient. If you're in a hurry to reach your destination, it will increase the likelihood of a crash.
  • Use your headlights. This can do two things for you: It helps you see the road, and it makes it easier for other drivers to see your vehicle.
  • Leave more space. You should never drive in close proximity to other vehicles, but this is even more so the case in heavy rain. You will need more time to stop, so make sure you leave a few extra car lengths.

While you have full control over what you do while you're behind the wheel, you never know what other drivers will do. You hope they make sound decisions, but this isn't always the case.

If another driver causes an accident, move your vehicle to a safe place and remain where you are until police and an ambulance arrive. You may need to call 911 for help.

Once you receive treatment for your injuries, you can then learn more about your legal rights. If the other party was at fault, you may be in position to receive compensation for your injuries and other damages.
