Smaller vehicles not as safe as larger cars in car crashes

When New York drivers become involved in car accidents, there are many factors that can determine how severe the injuries are. One that plays a major role is the size of the vehicles involved. Usually, larger vehicles are safer, especially when a collision that involves both large and small vehicles occurs.

Part of the problem is that smaller cars tend to weigh less. This means that, when an accident takes place, the occupants in the lighter vehicle will experience more of the force in the crash because the vehicle stops moving more quickly. For example, the occupants of SUVs or trucks will be less affected by the forces involved in the accident if a smaller vehicle is involved.

Smaller vehicles also usually have smaller front ends than larger vehicles. In frontal collisions, the front end absorbs some of the impact. Vehicles that have a larger front end absorb more impact, potentially reducing the severity of the injuries. Because smaller vehicles generally have smaller front ends, more of the impact is transferred to the vehicle occupants, potentially leaving them with injuries that are more severe than they would have been if they were in a larger vehicle.

When the drivers of large cars or trucks cause motor vehicle accidents, those involved could suffer major life-altering or life-threatening injuries, especially if they in a smaller vehicle. In some cases, these injuries may be severe enough that they prevent the injured from working or living a normal, pain-free life. Those who suffered severe injuries may be able to file a personal injury claim against the liable driver and the liable driver's insurance company in order to seek compensation. An attorney may attempt to negotiate a settlement that covers medical expenses, lost income and other damages.
