Winter conditions can make the roads more dangerous

Many New York drivers are aware that the road conditions can become dangerous very quickly when winter arrives. In fact, weather is a major factor in many car accidents, as the U.S. DOT Federal Highway Administration estimates that about 22 percent of all car crashes were related to the weather conditions.

In the winter, ice and black ice are major dangers that can result in car accidents. Ice forms on wet roads during the early morning hours when the temperatures are at their coldest. Because the ground and the road takes longer to heat up during the day, ice can still be present even if the air temperatures feel warm. Black ice is also dangerous as it just looks like wet road. Both ice and black ice prevent the tires from getting a grip on the asphalt, potentially resulting in a crash.

To help prevent weather-related accidents from occurring, there are several things that drivers can do. First, they can ensure that their vehicle has been properly winterized. This means checking tire pressure, brakes and adding snow chains if they do not have snow tires. They can also slow down and give themselves extra space to stop, especially if there is snow on the roads or if the roads appear wet.

When motor vehicle accidents occur in the winter, incidents that would otherwise be minor could result in serious injuries, especially if ice or black ice played a factor. Although some may suffer injuries but fully recover, others may experience long-term complications that prevent them from being able to return to work or enjoy the life that they once had. A personal injury attorney may work with the responsible insurance company to seek compensation for the damages. If the insurance company refuses to settle for an appropriate amount, the attorney may litigate on behalf of an injured person.
