Deadly Takata Airbag Recall Still Expanding

48071232_S_air_bags_car_crash_windshield_shattered.jpgThe Takata airbag saga continues. Japan's Takata Corporation, which supplies auto safety systems and components, first announced a problem with their airbags in 2013. The defective airbags may spray car occupants with broken metal fragments, resulting in serious injuries and even fatalities.

To date, 15 individuals have been killed in the U.S. with a total of 23 deaths worldwide and more than 300 more who have experienced serious injuries from these defective products.

Reports from the media have alleged that the company knew that the airbags were defective from as early as 2004.

Takata Adds Millions More Vehicles to the Recall List

This month, the company added more than 1.7 million additional U.S. vehicles to the recall list. These vehicles must have their airbag inflators replaced.

The Takata airbag recall is the largest and most complex automotive recall in U.S. history. To date, the recall covers 50 million airbag inflators in 37 million vehicles. (data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration NTSA)

The vehicles in the latest recall list are from a broad group of cars, SUVs and trucks from 19 manufacturers including Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Subaru, Tesla, VW and more. The recall covers both driver and passenger-side front airbag inflators. Automakers and the NHTSA are spacing out the replacement of Takata airbag inflators based on the risk to drivers and car occupants.

Takata Airbags Susceptible to Hot and Humid Climates

Takata airbags in humid environments like Florida or areas with high temperature fluctuations are particularly susceptible to malfunction. The propellant that deploys the airbag can degrade over time. When the airbags are deployed, for example in an auto accident, a rupture may launch sharp metal fragments into car occupants.

The replacement rate for those vehicles that have been recalled is slow due to a scarcity of new parts.

All vehicle owners should:

· Check for recalls using your VIN (vehicle identification number).

· Call your local dealer to get the fix at no charge. Bring it in as soon as possible.

· Sign up for Recall Alerts for any future recalls involving your vehicle.

You can find the complete recall list at this NHTSA website.
